ON THIS DAY, AUGUST 6, 1945 SOME 70 YEARS AGO THE JAPANESE CITY OF HIROSHIMA WAS DESTROYED BY A SINGLE LOW-YIELD (by today's standards)ATOMIC BOMB DROPPED FROM AN AMERICAN B-29 KILLING AN ESTIMATED 160,000 AND LEVELING SOME 5 SQUARE MILES OF THAT DOOMED CITY. THE BOMBING OF HIROSHIMA AND A FEW DAYS LATER OF NAGASAKI BROUGHT A QUICK END TO THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC AND SAVED AN ESTIMATED 1,000,000 CAUSALITIES HAD THE U.S. BEEN FORCED TO INVADE THE JAPANESE HOMELAND.
